Getting Help
Ask Ruby anything about the site and she will answer straight away. If she cannot help, or you would rather talk to a person, every answer below ends with somewhere real to go.
If somebody is in danger
We are not an emergency service and we cannot intervene in anything happening away from the site. Please contact the police first, then tell us so we can act on the account.
Ruby is an assistant, not a moderator. She cannot change your account.
Ruby is our AI assistant. She can explain how anything on the site works, but she cannot see your account, change your balance, approve a photograph or decide a refund. For those, email support and a person will pick it up.

Questions and answers
01What is TheDirectory.uk?
A digital services platform where adults create listings, find one another and communicate. We are not a bank, an employer, an agency, a booking service or law enforcement, and we are not a party to anything members arrange between themselves. Members who advertise do so as independent people or businesses.
Read the terms02Is it free to join and list a profile?
Yes. Joining and listing are free. Your profile goes live straight away, and verifying your identity and age adds the Verified tick and unlocks Live Cam, Sexting and Phone Fun.
How it works03How do you keep under 18s out?
Every visitor confirms they are 18 or over before entering. Messaging and every paid or explicit feature sit behind a real check: a person reviews a government identity document against a live photograph of the same person, so a borrowed or downloaded document does not pass.
Online safety04Are profiles and photographs checked?
Yes. Every profile and every photograph is reviewed by a person, and every photograph is looked at before it is shown. Members who have verified their identity carry a Verified tick.
How it works05Can I block someone, report something or close my account?
Yes. Every profile and every conversation has a report and a block control; blocking stops messages both ways immediately and is not visible to the person blocked. When you close your account your profile and photographs are hidden straight away, and you can ask to see, correct or delete your data at any time.
Report and block06What happens to my identity documents?
A person checks them against a live photograph of you for the identity and age check. The image is deleted 12 months after we approve or reject it, or after 90 days if the check was never finished.
Privacy policy07Do you sell or share my personal data?
We do not sell your personal data. The companies that help us run the site act as our processors under a written contract, and may use it only as we instruct. Access to member data is limited to the people who need it to moderate or support the site.
Privacy policy08Who can read my messages?
You and the person you send them to, and a moderator only if a message is reported. Messages are not end to end encrypted. A conversation set to disappear is deleted automatically on the schedule you choose.
Privacy policy09Do you use advertising or tracking cookies?
No. No advertising or retargeting pixels and no fingerprinting. We set one analytics cookie, Matomo hosted on our own servers, and only if you accept the banner; it does not build an advertising profile of you and nothing it collects is sold or shared.
Cookies10Why does TheDirectory.uk exist?
Because it was an engineering challenge we wanted to take on. We are a digital services platform, and this idea brings together a great deal of current and next generation engineering practice in one place. What we built for it now helps independent businesses compete with long established names, and in many cases outperform them.
How it works11Is Ruby, the support assistant, a person?
No. Ruby is TheDirectory's AI support assistant. She can explain how anything on the site works, but she cannot see your account, approve a photograph or decide a refund. If she cannot help, a person can, and every answer on this page ends with somewhere real to go.
12Do you give my information to the police?
Only where there is a lawful basis, recorded at the time: for example a court order or a warrant, or a statutory power cited in the request. Requests must come from an official law enforcement or government email address, never a personal account. Where there is an imminent risk to a person's life or of serious physical harm, we can disclose information urgently.
13How do I make a complaint?
Email support with what happened, when, and what you would like us to do. We acknowledge every complaint within 2 working days, aim to resolve it within 14 days, and always resolve it within 30 days or explain why we cannot. You can ask for it to be looked at again by somebody more senior, and for personal data you can go to the Information Commissioner's Office at any point.
14Is TheDirectory.uk regulated?
Yes. TheDirectory.uk is a regulated service under the Online Safety Act 2023, and Ofcom is the regulator for online safety. For personal data, the Information Commissioner's Office is the regulator.
