Careers

We are not hiring hands. We are hiring instinct.

Software can write code all night. It cannot feel a friction point. You can.

  • Human reviewed
  • United Kingdom
  • Private directory

Tools that never sleep are easy to find. Taste, judgement and drive are not.

Software can do a lot. What we need is the part it cannot do: sensing how a thing should work, caring how it feels, and keeping going until it is right.

01How we work

Instinct first.

  • 01

    Think different

The obvious answer is usually somebody else's. Start from the person using the site and work backwards.

  • 02

    Feel the engineering

You sense how a thing should work before you can explain it. Then you go and prove it.

  • 03

    Feel the friction

The step where someone hesitates. The screen where they leave. You notice it, and it bothers you until it is gone.

  • 04

    Journeys people remember

Good work is felt, not noticed. People remember how it went without knowing why.

  • 05

    A person checks it

Every profile and every photograph is reviewed by a person. The part that matters most is never left to a machine.

  • 06

    A membership kept deliberately small

TheDirectory is a private directory for adults in the United Kingdom. We would rather be good than loud.

02Where you could fit

Where instinct counts.

These are the kinds of work the site involves. If you fit somewhere else, tell us that too.

  • Photo and verification review

Every profile and every photograph on the site is reviewed by a person, and members verify their identity to carry a tick. That is human work.

You notice the detail everyone else scrolled past, and you make the call calmly.

  • Member support

Members write to us about their accounts, verification and payments. You answer like a person, fix the cause, and spot the question that keeps coming back.

You can hear the frustration behind a short message and you want it gone.

  • Engineering

The directory, the member dashboard, chat and the forum. You care how it feels as much as whether it works, and you find the friction a test never catches.

You can feel how a thing should work before you can explain it.

  • Growth and search

City guides, search pages and the routes that bring people in. You know why someone lands on a page, and what makes them stay.

You build journeys people remember without knowing why.

03Open roles

No advertised vacancies right now.

That does not mean the door is shut. If you read this far and something clicked, send us something that makes us stop.

Apply anyway

04What happens after you apply

Plain and simple.

  1. 1

    Send it to us

Tell us what you noticed and how you would fix it. If we want to talk, we will email you.

  2. 2

We look at how you think

The friction point you send tells us more than a CV. We look at what you noticed and how you would fix it.

  3. 3

We reply if we want to talk

If there is a fit, we email you to arrange a conversation. We cannot reply to everyone, and we would rather say so plainly.

05Apply

Show us how you think.

No CV needed to start. Send us one friction point you have spotted, on any site, ours included, and how you would fix it.

  • One friction point you have noticed, anywhere.
  • How you would fix it, in a few lines.
  • A link to something you have made, if you have one.
