Nightlife in York
York packs a great deal of pubs, restaurants and old lanes into a small area inside its walls. Here is a street by street view of where the evening goes and how to get home.
Compact, and often crowded
The middle of York is small, and visitors fill it for much of the year, so weekends can feel packed. The upside is that almost everything is within walking distance. The downside is that narrow old streets and uneven paving make a long night harder on tired legs, so choose comfortable footwear.

Micklegate and the station side
Micklegate climbs away from the river on the station side of town and is lined with pubs, bars and places to eat. It is among the livelier streets in the evening, which makes it a sensible start if you have come in by train and want to be close to the way home.

Coney Street, Fossgate and Walmgate
Coney Street heads through the centre to the water and has a busy, commercial feel. Across the middle, Fossgate and Walmgate lean towards independent bars and eateries and a slightly more local mood. Walking from one to the other takes you through some of the oldest and narrowest parts of the centre.

The riverside
The River Ouse runs through the city, and its banks are lovely at dusk. Some stretches are poorly lit and quiet later on, so use the riverside for an early walk and take the streets home instead. After heavy rain the paths can flood, so check before you set out.

The way back
Book a licensed taxi ahead, glance at the badge and the number plate, and look up the last train from York station. A booked car is a safer choice than an offer made on the street. This is a site for adults, so everyone using it must be at least eighteen, and a friend should always know your plans.

Frequently asked questions
It can be busy, particularly in the main streets and at peak visitor times. Booking a table and a taxi ahead helps a good deal.
Parts of the riverside are quiet and poorly lit late on, so it is better to take the busier streets home.
