Nightlife in Exeter
Exeter is a city on a slope, with the quayside at the bottom and the cathedral near the middle. An evening here is easier if you know which way is downhill.
Mind the slope
Exeter's streets fall towards the river, so a walk out to the quayside is easy and the walk back is not. Plan for that at the end of the night, especially in the wrong shoes. Taxis are the better answer when you are tired.

Two stations, two approaches
Exeter St Davids is the larger station, set up on a rise above the centre. Exeter Central is closer to the main shopping streets. Which one suits you depends on where you are heading, so check the last service from each before you commit to a late finish.

Gandy Street, Fore Street and Princesshay
Gandy Street is a short, narrow lane of small independent places in the heart of the centre. Fore Street slopes down to the river and carries a mix of shops and pubs. Princesshay is the modern shopping area, with places to eat nearby. Together they make a good loop for an unhurried evening.

Cathedral Green and the Quay
Cathedral Green is an open lawn beside the cathedral and is popular on dry evenings. The Quay, further down beside the River Exe, has a relaxed, outdoor feel in good weather and plenty of places to sit. Both are quieter late on, so do not linger there alone after dark.
