Things to Do in Cardiff

Cardiff is a small capital with a walkable centre, a river running through green space and a bay on its southern edge. Here is how to fill a day or an evening without much planning.

A centre you can cross in minutes

The middle of Cardiff is small enough to walk across without a map. Wide pedestrian streets link the main station, Cardiff Central, to the shopping area, and a number of covered Victorian arcades branch off them, lined with small independent shops and cafes. They are a handy shelter when the weather turns, and they make a pleasant slow wander in their own right. Most of what you might want is inside a single short walk.

Parkland beside the Taff

On the city's western side, open parkland runs beside the River Taff, with broad paths, mature trees and plenty of benches. Cyclists and runners share it, so it is lively rather than secluded, but the going is flat and gentle, so it suits a long conversation. Pontcanna, the neighbourhood beside it, has cafes and a relaxed weekday pace, and a lunch stop there is easy to find.

Cardiff Bay for water and space

Cardiff Bay sits south of the city centre, a district of waterside walks, restaurants and open squares, redeveloped from old dockland. It is exposed to the wind, so bring an extra layer. A short branch line and several bus routes link it with the centre, and it suits an evening stroll as the light fades.

Roath for a neighbourhood afternoon

Roath, a neighbourhood to the north east, is largely residential, with a good run of independent cafes and shops, and a large area of green space with a lake close by. It is the sort of place where you can linger over coffee without feeling you are in a tourist spot, and buses run there from the centre. Go in the afternoon, when the cafes are at their most relaxed.

Wet weather and the wider region

Museums, galleries and covered markets give plenty of indoor options. Trains run along the coast to Penarth, a seaside town with a promenade, and north into the South Wales Valleys, where steep hillsides and former mining villages make a very different scene from the city. Both journeys are short, so either can be fitted around a late start.

Getting around, and an adults only note

Cardiff is largely flat, which makes walking easy. Buses reach all the districts above, taxis wait at the station and in the centre, and the last trains up the Valleys leave earlier than many people expect, so check before you commit to a long evening. Nobody under 18 should use TheDirectory, and every listing is written with adult readers in mind.
