Things to Do in Belfast

Belfast is compact enough to enjoy in a single day or evening, with a river, a lough and hills all close to the centre. This guide sets out what a visitor can do, by area and by type.

Start in the middle on foot

The middle of Belfast is compact, so you can cross it on foot and a first visit stays forgiving. Begin around Donegall Square and let the streets lead you outwards. Shopping streets, arcades and covered passages sit close together, and a seat and a hot drink are never far off.

Museums and galleries around the Queen's Quarter

Several of the city's museums and galleries are found in the Queen's Quarter, near the university, where the streets are calm by day. Exhibitions on local history, art and natural science suit a wet afternoon. Opening times change, so confirm them with the organiser before you set out.

The Cathedral Quarter by daylight

Before it fills up in the evening, the Cathedral Quarter is a pleasant place for a daytime wander. Look out for murals and street art on the gable walls, and for small independent shops and cafes in the lanes. A slow loop takes an hour or two without any plan at all.

The River Lagan and the Titanic Quarter

The Lagan runs through the city to Belfast Lough, and the paths beside it are good for a flat, easy walk. Further downstream the Titanic Quarter is a redeveloped waterfront district of wide quays and open water. It is breezy, so bring a layer, and it is at its best in daylight or the early evening.

Hills, shore and day trips by train

Hills rise to the north and west of the city, and on a clear day they give wide views over the lough. Trains serve towns along the shore, including Holywood on the Bangor line and Carrickfergus on the Larne line, each with a seafront or harbour to walk beside. Lanyon Place is the station nearest the waterfront, while Great Victoria Street serves the southern side of the middle.

If the weather turns

Rain is never far away in Belfast, so keep a few indoor ideas in reserve. Museums, galleries, covered shopping and long lunches all fill a grey afternoon comfortably. A hotel lounge or a quiet cafe is also a fair place to wait out a shower.

Getting around

Nearly everything above lies a stroll from Donegall Square, and buses fill the gaps. After dark, anywhere further out is better reached by a licensed cab that you have arranged beforehand.
